Flush dropped crossings must be provided at all locations where pedestrians and cyclists cross or join a carriageway. Continuous footways are not normally permitted, in order to avoid a broad range of situations where it is ambiguous who has the primary right of way on areas of the highway that are not the main carriageway. These crossing points should be constructed to the council’s standard drawing (SD/11/8, Flush-dropped crossings – Type B). Site specific context needs to be considered, such as the maximum upstand to be achieved for inclusive mobility, and a consideration of drainage and levels to reduce ponding at the crossing area.
