Speed control

Manual for Streets states that:

“For residential streets, a maximum design speed of 20 mph should normally be an objective.”

Vehicle speeds within new developments should be controlled through the design and layout of the roads and the locations of buildings and not by using traffic-calming features (particularly vertical features such as road humps). Options such as road geometry and dimensions, changes in priority at junctions and design of road markings should be considered before proposing the introduction of vertical speed control features.
